Bean Rockers
Year: 2008
Winner of the 2009 iF Product Design Award
The Bean Rocker series is an exploration in dynamic and flexible
ways of inhabiting our spaces. The lightweight design of the bean
rockers makes them easy to move, store, and use in a variety of
applications. The rocking seats are adaptable to many body types
and shapes with four
different models.
There have been various medical studies that have shown that sitting
too long in the same position can lead to adverse health effects.
The bean rockers encourage shifting of posture and positions to
help alleviate the stresses on the body caused by stagnancy in seating.
The ergonomic design and rocking ability help people of all sizes
and ages sit in a healthier, interactive way. They are meant to
encourage ease of breating, flexibility in seating, and a sense
of balance. They can be used as meditation seats, aids for stretching
and exercising, or for any low seating application in your home.
The bean rockers were introduced at the International Contemporary
Furniture Fair in May 2008. The chairs were a hit and labeled as
a trend-setter in the NYTimes coverage of the show. Many show-goers
at ICFF thought the bean rockers were for children as their size
was relatively small when compared to other chairs present at the
show - however, once seated, most everyone noted that the comfort
and ease was apparent for adults as well
as kids.
The bean rockers come flat-packed or assembled (for a fee).
Materials: FSC certified maple plywood finished with natural linseed
oil, standard steel hardware, and each comes with a padded organic
cotton cushion. Colors of textiles depend upon availability.
Chair is made in San Francisco CA, Cushion is made in India.
