Socal Rendevouz Part Trois

The 3rd stop: A trek in the wrong direction and two fabulous fish tacos later, I arrive at the home of John Stein, owner of Kirei and Organo Natural.

Kirei Board is a board material made from sorghum wheat stalks. After the edible portion of the plant is harvested the stalks are gathered and used to make Kirei. Made entirely from agricultural fiber, this material is not only handsome but makes an excellent substitute for wood. Back in 2004, I came across Kirei when I attended the Caboom Show (www.caboomshow.com). This year in March, I visited the Kirei booth again at Caboom when Knoend exhibited for the first time there. And now 3 years and 9 months after I first was introduced to the material, I finally had some ideas of how I might apply this gorgeous material.

It turned out that Kirei Board was one of many eco-materials that the company was producing, others included wheatboard, bamboo plywood, and coconut shell. In fact, John was meeting with the Coconut Shell manufacturer right after our meeting. I talked with John and the Kirei Sales Director in John's backyard in signature socal style. We joked about small business, recounted our forays into entrepreneurship, and looked at how Knoend's ideas would work with Kirei's materials.

As I left John's house, I waved and said, "Have fun with the Coconut Dude!"
